Zero and I
Video projection, sculpture, audio, Touch Designer and motion sensor
Programmer Michael Maggs
The void encompasses a broad field of disciplines and cultures and has provoked continuous fascination in humans. Its nature, intersecting diverse lines of dialogue, creates an incredibly profound and yet ambiguous pool to draw from. This research project dips into this in an effort to create a meaningful experience and encourage dialogue on the void and its many placeholders (nothingness, zero, silence).
The artwork used virtual imagery (video) projected onto real sculpture; used motion sensors to allow audience interactivity; and encouraged the audience approach the work and move around it in the physical space. The aim of the project was to create a new way of depicting the void by using contemporary methods that build on the history of art. The void has remained a profound subject in art and the expanding technology available to artists creates exciting potential for further exploration.
