Murkwood

Tidal

Carved paper board, acrylic paint, oil based printing ink. Size: 40 cm x 80cm. 2022.

This work depicts a shore at low tide, revealing the underwater landscape and leaving everchanging patterns. Carved lines flow around pale rocks, glaciers or pools and fill the foreground; the viewer’s eye travels up towards the horizon which is cut from view.

I use a technique which builds on traditional printmaking practice, only rather than printing the carved relief image the work is treated as a one off piece. The base is a thick 3mm paper board and I use a bladed tool/knife to cut into the board and then peel away the shapes made with the knife.

Creating this work (and any work that depicts natural landscapes) I cannot disconnect from the impact of humans. The act of cutting away the landscape is poetic of the act of humans removing natural elements from the landscape, the mark is irreversible.

For Rosie

Carved paper board, shellac, 12 and 23 kt gold leaf, and oil based ink. Size: 80cm x 40 cm. Private commission, 2021.

Created for my sister, the artwork includes topographical patterns of the Brisbane River, Maiwar and the London Thames. The rivers are significant landmarks in her life, which has been split between the two locations.

The artwork entwines the two rivers together; one is always upside down and the work can be hung either way depending on which hemisphere she is in. The London Thames is leafed in 12kt gold, the Brisbane river is leafed in 23kt gold.

Around the rivers is a fingerprint-like pattern which curves tightly around the rivers and loosens as it expands outwards into the surrounding dark blue inky space, giving the impression that her fingerprint continues reverberating outwards.

Vicious Cycle

Carved paper board, shellac, bronze powder, metal leaf and oil based ink. Size: 37 cm x 80 cm. Exhibited at Scratch Bar for the Bush Fire Relief exhibition in 2020.

Available as limited edition print in Shop.

Created in response to the devastating bush fires of 2020. The work depicts the nature of extreme bush fires which create their own weather cycle, causing dry lightning and perpetuating a vicious cycle that reeks havoc across vast areas.

Spare Parts

Oil paint on timber panel, 2020.

Created during the COVID19 lock down, this series was a keep sane project. I started painting my own hands and feet and then asked friends to supply theirs. The culmination of the series was exhibited at Brew Café and Bar. The below gallery features only three of the total nine artworks created, I will be adding more images soon.

Loved

Loved is a series of oil paintings which was exhibited at Woolloongabba Art Gallery in 2017. The colour pallet, size and installation of the paintings reference the nostalgia of old photographs stuck to a wall which have faded in their colours until only reds remain. Each landscape references a personal narrative affectionately rendered in rose colours.

Memento

Oil paintings. Exhibited at the The Scratch Bar, 2019.

A collection of acrylic and oil paintings, featuring still-life paintings of the paraphernalia the Good Family Scratch has collected over the years.

The Gaze

Oil paint on timber panel.

The Gaze features a series of six oil paintings created to acknowledge the viewer rather than the subject. Eye contact with the painted subject changes the direction of the gaze to gravitate inwards whereas a lack of eye contact allows the viewer freedom to roam.

Blanket of Immortality

Landscope

Watercolour paint on paper, mounted in handmade acrylic boxes. Exhibited at Woolloogabba Art Gallery, 2015

Landscope is a series of watercolour landscapes. The works limit the landscape to a neat circle, giving the viewer the impression of peering through a portal into a distant land. Displayed in clear acrylic boxes to suggest preservation that contrasts with the delicate hand painted watercolours and accompanied poems.

Adventurous Souls

Carved paper board, mixed media. Exhibited at Woolloongabba Art Gallery, 2014.
